Handel - four Chandos Anthems (1990)

The Chandos Anthems are a set of eleven anthems composed by George Frideric Handel, written between 1717 and 1718. These works were commissioned by James Brydges, the First Duke of Chandos, for use in the chapel at Cannons, his estate. The anthems are characterized by their relatively modest scoring, reflecting the available forces at Cannons, and often feature intimate textures

This latest volume in the Haydn 2032 series is titled ‘Per il Luigi,’ a reference to Italian violinist Luigi Tomasini, who became concertmaster of the Esterhazy orchestra in June 1761. Haydn wrote all three symphonies included here (Nos. 13, 16 and 36, as well as the first violin concerto) to highlight the talents of individual players in his ensemble.
